  • Description

THE 23RD BERMUDA YACHT RACE FROM NEW PORT, RHODE ISLAND, U.S.A. - A DISTANCE OF 6325 NAUTICAL MILES - STARTED JUNE 16 WITH 131 BOATS, SOON TO BE OUT OF SIGHT IN A THIN HAZE.

WEATHER FORECASTS INDICATED A CONTINUATION OF THE MIST AND A LIGHT WIND FOR AT LEAST THE FIRST DAY AND NIGHT. THE LAST WINNER IN 1960 - TAKING FIVE DAYS TO COMPLETE THE COURSE - WAS "FINISTERRE", A 40-FOOT YAWL, BUT SHE IS NOT ENTERED THIS YEAR. "FINISTERRE" ALSO WON IN 1956 AND 1958. A NEW WINNER IS CONSIDERED MOST LIKELY, ACCORDING TO RACE EXPERTS, THOUGH THREE PREVIOUS WINNERS - THE YAWLS "MALAY" AND "ARGYLL" AND THE SLOOP "GESTURE - ARE COMPETING AGAIN.

THE RACE - THE OLDEST OPEN OCEAN RACE IN AMERICAN SAILING - ATTRACTS YACHTSMEN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. AMONG THEM THIS YEAR ARE COMPETITORS FROM THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY, ANNAPOLIS; FROM CANADA, ENGLAND AND ITALY.
