Background: Badminton: The fourth Asian Confederation Championships have ended in Bangkok with sweeping victories for China. In the women's singles on Saturday (13 December), Song Youping beat her compatriot San Yanqin, 11-5, 11-8. And in the men's singles championship, Han Jian defeated Chen Changjie, also of China, 15-11, 15-8. Chinese teams also won the trophies in the men's and women's doubles championships. Sixty players from 12 countries took part in the event.

SYNOPSIS: Song Youping, at the far end, is serving to San Yanqin in the women's singles, and it's match point in a game where quick reflexes are an asset and being acrobatic helps too ...

And it's a fine victory -- and the womens singles trophy -- for Song Youping.

And now Han Jian, nearest the camera, is serving to win the first set against Chen Changjie. Han Jian was top seed in the championships and he's China's unofficial champion.

Chen Changjie serves in the second set with the score at 8-14 and it's the start of a long gruelling rally -- the highlight of the match. It ended with Chen losing his service.

Han Jian serves for championship point. He won the match with superb drop shots and smashes, and clearing that was deep and accurate.

It's reported that if a Malaysian proposal is accepted, Asia's next badminton championships may not take place until 1982.
