  • Description

LIMA, CAPITAL OF PERU WHERE ACCORDING TO REPORTS REACHING LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY) IS A POSSIBILITY OF A REVOLT. IN A BROADCAST FROM THE CAPITAL LAST NIGHT THE MILITARY GROUP WHO SEIZED POWER LAST JULY CALLED ON THEIR LEADER, GENERAL RICARDO PEREZ GODOY, TO RESIGN. THE BROADCAST MADE BY THE DEPUTY LEADER, GENERAL NICHOLAS LINDLEY. HE ACCUSED GENERA; GODOY OF SETTING HIMSELF UP AS A DICTATOR AND SAID HE MUST GO SO THAT FREE ELECTIONS COULD BE HELD IN JUNE.

GENERAL GODOY HIMSELF HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY IN WHICH THERE WERE "SYMPTOMS" OF A SPLIT AMONG THE FOUR CO-PRESIDENTS OF THE MILITARY JUNTA. HE WOULD DO ANYTHING POSSIBLE TO ENSURE THAT ELECTIONS WERE HELD ON JUNE 9TH.

THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF PERU, MANUEL PRADO, ELECTED IN 1956, WAS DEPOSED BY THE MILITARY COUP D'ETAT ON JULY 18TH, 1962, JUST 10 DAYS BEFORE HIS SIX YEAR TERM OF OFFICE WAS DUE TO EXPIRE. THE COUP FOLLOWED PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS AT WHICH NONE OF THE 7 CANDIDATES ACHIEVED THE NECESSARY ONE-THIRD OF THE TOTAL VOTES CAST.

ELECTORS CLASHED WITH POLICE TROOPS WHEN THE NEWS OF THE MILITARY COUP WAS KNOWN. MANY OF THESE SUPPORTED VICTOR RAUL HAYA DE LA TORRE OF THE LEFT WING, ANTI-COMMUNIST APRA PARTY. HE POLLED THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF VOTES IN THE ELECTION AND MAY HAVE SUCCEEDED PRESIDENT PRADO HAD THE TROOPS NOT INTERVENED.
