    Negroes in the city of Danville, Virginia (American Southeast coast) have been the latest to stage continual and concentrated demonstrations to break the shackles of segregation.

    For a week they have been staging demonstrations in order to win equal rights in public restaurants.

    The demonstrations broke out into violence on the night of 10 June.Negroes accused police of attacking them after the demonstrators were arrested.Police claim the Negroes arrested, spat and cursed the officers.

    Altogether 47 persons were hurt and two were taken to a hospital.Bullets were fired into two police cars and into a private automobile.

    Since the demonstrations began, hundreds of Negro demonstrators were arrested.The violence has widened the gap between the white and Negro community.And efforts of a bi-racial committee to reach an accommodation on Negro rights have foundered.

    Despite the violence, tension and arrests, the Negroes continue to demonstrate to win equal rights.Their leaders claim they will continue staging sit-in demonstrations at segregated restaurants and other places of public accommodation.
