Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad visited the Jordanian capital, Amman, for two days this week (9 and 10 December) for talks with Jordan's King Hussein. The two leaders talked about political, military and economic co-ordination and unification between their countries.

President Assad's visit was a continuation of meeting between the two leaders being held alternately in Amman and the Syrian capital, Damascus, every three months to review the current situation in the region, world developments and progress in unifying the two nations.

Earlier this year President Assad became the first Syrian President to visit Jordan. In 1970 Syria and Jordan were in open conflict.

During this week's visit President Assad and King Hussein had several meeting alone and also chaired two sessions of the Higher Syrian-Jordanian Committee formed nine months ago.

The Syrian leader was accompanied on the trip by his wife, and the Prime Minister, Mahmoud Al-Ayoubi, the Syrian Foreign, defence, Economic and Information Ministers and a number of other advisers.

Before he left Damascus for Amman President Assad met at length with the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation leader, Yasser Arafat. It is understood that the Palestinians hope that the President Assad will be able eventually to persuade King Hussein to resume the dialogue with the PLO.

SYNOPSIS: Syria's President Hafez al-Assad visited the jordanian city of amman on Tuesday and wednesday for another round of talks with Jordan's King Hussein.

The two leaders had embarked on a series of talks which are being held alternately in Amman and the Syrian capital, Damascus, every three months. The main subjects under discussion were political, military and economic co-ordination and unification between the two countries.

When President Assad visited Amman for the first time nine months ago it was the first time a Syrian President had visited Jordan. In nineteen-seventy Syria and Jordan were in open conflict, but now, as on other visits, President Assad is a popular figure with the Jordanians.

Syria's Prime Minister, Mahmoud Al-Ayoubi, and other cabinet ministers and advisers accompanied President Assad on this week's trip.

Mrs. Assad also accompanied her husband and the couple were met at the Presidential Palace by King Hussein and Queen Alia. Before leaving Damascus the President spoke with Palestinian Liberation Organisation leader, Yasser Arafat. It's believed the Palestinians hope President Assad can convince King Hussein to resume the dialogue with the PLO.

During the visit the two leaders had several private discussions. They also chaired two sessions of the Higher Syrian-Jordanian Committee, formed after President Assad's first visit to Amman.
