  • Description

Greek Left-wing leader Andreas Papandreou returned home on Saturday (17 August) after six years of self-imposed exile. Mr. Papandreou, leader of the Pan-Hellenic Liberation Movement, has long been an opponent of United States policies toward Greece. He also opposed the military junta, which stood down last month.

On his return, Mr. Papandreou claimed the Untied states has planned "the slaughter of Cyprus, its partition and Greece's national humiliation".

Mr. Papandreou returned at a time when the Greek people are particularly bitter towards the United States. Thousands of people protested in Greek cities on Saturday about what they consider as the unwillingness of the americans to curb Turkey's invasion of Cyprus. And on the political side, there was still the distinct possibility that the Greek Government would demand the removal of American forces from the country.

Mr. Papandreou, the son of a former Greek Premier and a former Minister himself, said in an interview soon after leaving Greece, that he did so because he felt he could fight dictatorship in his country more effectively from abroad. Throughout his period in exile, Mr. Papandreou campaigned for the return of democratic rule in Greece.
