  • Description

In Rhodesia, more than 300 members of Mr Joshua Nkomo's Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU), including 10 of its national executive, have been arrested in the last few days (to 15 September). However some members of the executive including Mr joshiah Chinamano, the Vice President, left the country and arrived in London on Wednesday (13 September). The move against ZAPU followed the announcement by Mr Ian Smith that he was taking steps to "liquidate" internal organisations associated with terrorism. His statement followed the shooting down of an Air Rhodesia airliner and the massacre of 10 of the survivors.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Chinamano left Salisbury by air on Tuesday. ZAPU had not been officially banned but as Mr Chinamano explained, his party believed security forces were preparing to detain them. He spoke to reporter John Darby.
