    THOUSANDS OF IBADAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, STAFF AND WORKERS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) DEMONSTRATED IN THE STREETS OF THE WESTERN NIGERIAN CAPITAL IN PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED FOREIGN INTERVENTION IN THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR. ABOUT 500 PEOPLE HURLED STONES AND BURNED THE BRITISH FLAG AT THE BRITISH DEPUTY HIGH COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE AS PART OF THE PROTEST.

    AT THE BRITISH OFFICE, THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED BANNERS WHICH DENOUNCED BRITAIN, THE UNITED STATES, FRANCE AND THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION. THEY LODGED PROTEST NOTES AT THE BRITISH MISSION AND THE AMERICAN CONSULATE.

    IT'S UNDERSTOOD THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WILL EXPRESS CONCERN TO THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT AGAINST WHAT IT CONSIDERED INADEQUATE POLICE PROTECTION DESPITE PRIOR ASSURANCES OF FULL PROTECTION.

    ANTI-RIOT POLICE STOPPED THE PROTEST DEVELOPING INTO A FIERCE DEMONSTRATION. AT ONE STAGE THEY USED TEAR GAS TO DISPERSE STUDENTS.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS ANNOUNCED THEIR "READINESS TO SERVE NIGERIA IN THE EVENT OF A TOTAL MOBILISATION OF THE NATION AS ANNOUNCED BY THE HEAD OF THE FEDERAL MILITARY GOVERNMENT". SOME STUDENTS ALSO TORE DOWN A PLAQUE FROM THE UNITED STATES INFORMATION SERVICES BUILDING IN IBADAN.
