  • Description

THERE IS STILL SOME CONFUSION ABOUT EVENTS IN IRAQ IN THE PAST TWENTY FOUR HOURS FOLLOWING A REVOLT IN WHICH GENERAL KASSEM, THE PRIME MINISTER AND VIRTUAL HEAT OF STATE WAS KILLED.

GENERAL KASSEM CAME TO POWER AFTER AN ARMY REVOLT ON JULY 14, 1958, WHEN A GROUP OF OFFICERS, LED BY GENERAL KASSEM, OVERTHREW YOUNG KING FEISAL II.IN THE REVOLT, THE KING, THE CROWN PRINCE, AND ALL MEMBERS OF HIS IMMEDIATE FAMILY, AND THE CHIEF MINISTER, NURI ES SAID, WERE KILLED.

FOUR DAYS AFTER THE REVOLT -- ON JULY 19, 1958 -- A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN WAS ALLOWED INTO THE SHATTERED PALACE OF KING FEISAL TO GET EXCLUSIVE PICTURES.THEY BEAR OUT THE EARLY REPORTS THAT THE REBELS HAD TRIED TO WRECK THE PALACE.BULLET MARKS AND FIRE SCAR THE WALLS; SOME PARTS OF THE PALACE WERE BADLY DAMAGED.

AFTER THE OVERTHROW OF THE MONARCHY (SET UP IN 1921), A REPUBLICAN FORM OF GOVERNMENT WAS ESTABLISHED, RULED BY A THREE MAN COUNCIL OF GOVEREIGNTY, EXERCISING PRESIDENTIAL POWERS, AND A CABINET FORMED BY GENERAL KASSEM.

ALTHOUGH GENERAL KASSEM'S GOVERNMENT APPEARED TO HAVE WON POPULAR SUPPORT IN IRAQ, ONE ATTEMPT WAS MADE ON HIS LIFE ON OCTOBER 7, 1959.GENERAL KASSEM WAS INJURED IN THE SHOOTING ATTACK BUT SINCE THEN THERE HAD BEEN NO WIDESPREAD REPORTS OF A THREAT TO HIS POWER.

HIS FIRST APPEARANCE AFTER THAT WAS ON DECEMBER 9, 1959, WHEN GENERAL KASSEM HELD A REUNION LUNCHEON FOR ARMY LEADERS AND CIVILIANS WHO HELPED IN THE 1958 COUP D'ETAT.

JOURNALISTS AND OTHER OBSERVERS WHO HAD MET AND TALKED WITH GENERAL KASSEM DESCRIBED HIM AS AN APPARENTLY SHY MAN, SLIGHTLY BUILT AND WIRY, WHO HAD NO TALENT AS AN ORATOR.HOWEVER, HE SEEMED TO POSSESS A MYSTICAL PERSONALITY WHICH ATTRACTED A WIDE AND POPULAR FOLLOWING.

THERE WERE MANY MASS DEMONSTRATIONS OF SUPPORT.ON DECEMBER 3, 1961, THOUSANDS OF IRAQ'S HELD A RALLY OUTSIDE GENERAL KASSEM'S DEFENCE MINISTRY HEADQUARTERS IN BAGHDAD.DECEMBER 3 WAS THE DAY SET APART TO MARK GENERAL KASSEM'S ESCAPE FROM THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT IN 1959.

GENERAL KASSEM'S GOVERNMENT MADE KNOWN ITS POLICY OF NON ALIGNMENT EITHER TO EASTERN OR WESTERN POWER BLOCKS.THE SOVIET FIRST DEPUTY PREMIER, MR.ANASTAS MIKOYAN, VISITED IRAQ IN APRIL 1960, AND ALTHOUGH HE WAS GIVEN A WARM AND FRIENDLY RECEPTION, THERE WERE NO MOVES TO FORGE CLOSER LINKS THAN THE TWO COUNTRIES ALREADY ENJOYED.

INSTEAD GENERAL KASSEM MAINTAINED CLOSE LINKS WITH BOTH EASTERN AND WESTERN NATIONS, BUT WAS DEDICATED, ABOVE ALL ELSE, TO THE CAUSE OF ARAB NATIONALISM.
