• Short Summary

STRENGTH IS A RELATIVE THING. ONCE MAN USED THE MUSCLES OF THE HORSE AND OXEN?

  • Description

STRENGTH IS A RELATIVE THING. ONCE MAN USED THE MUSCLES OF THE HORSE AND OXEN TO CARRY HIS BURDEN, BUT NOW THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE, IN ONE FORM OF ANOTHER, HAS LIFTED THE LOAD FROM ANIMAL TO MACHINE. IN THIS AGE OF MODERN SCIENCE, THE FEATHER-LIGHT TOUCH OF POWER CONTROLS HAS REPLACED THE STAINING LEATHER REINS WITH WHICH MAN CONTROLLED HIS BEASTS. NO LONGER DO WE SEE THE PICTURES OF MAN HOLDING BACK THE GREAT CART-HORSES OF A HUNDRED YEARS AGO. YET, TODAY IN BONN, LIVES A 20TH CENTURY HERCULES WHO CAN HOLD BACK THE VEHICLES OF THE 1960'S. HIS NAME IS MAX HARTMANN AND AT 52 YEARS OLD HE HAS NO DIFFICULTY IN HOLDING BACK A LIGHT SPORTS PLANE WITH ONE HAND, AND A NEW CAR WITH THE OTHER. HARTMANN WHO TOPS THE SCALES AT 16 STONE (2 ZENTNER), IS 6 FOOT 1 INCH IN HEIGHT (1.85 METRES). HE FIRST STARTED PLYING HIS STRENGTH AGAINST CARS IN 1936 AND THREE YEARS AGO FIRST ANCHORED TWO PLANES TO THE GROUND.
