  • Description

Africa's World Soccer Cup representatives, Zaire, were given a hard match in the Ninth African Nation's Cup finals on Sunday (3 March) before eventually beating Guinea 2-1 in their Group "B" match.

The game played in the Egyptian Delta town of Damanhour before a crowd of 30,000 -- came alive in the 28th minute when the Zaire centre foward N'Daye headed his country into the lead from a corner. But, five minutes later, Guinea forward Bingalli hit a fierce shot high into the Zaire net.

The World Cup team had to wait until 16 minutes from the end before N'Daye scored again -- this time with a well aimed drive.

Among the crowd were two "spies" from Zaire's World Cup preliminary round opponents Brazil: team coach Maric Zagalo and National Soccer Federation President Jose Havelange.

They saw Zaire have the better of a fast game - but also some poor finishing by their forwards.

The Zaire squad have been having diet problems in Egypt. The chefs in their hotel refused to cook the slaughtered monkeys flown in from home specially for the team. The team had to cook their own monkeys in another part of the hotel kitchen and eat them in their rooms, instead of the hotel dining room.

In Group "A" games, Egypt beat Zambia 3-1 and the Ivory Coast and Uganda drew 1-1.
