    A former paratrooper, 34-year-old Ken Piper, tried to become a birdman in London on Thursday, stimulated by recent flying attempts by others in the field, and by April Fool's day.

    Another motive seemed to be commercial, since he carried a considerable amount of advertising on his 7-ft wood and plastic wings.

    Since he weighed 14-stone, no-one was surprised when the attempt at flight failed. After jumping from Twickenham bridge, he plummeted straight into the Thames - one of the more spectacular of the day's April fools. He talked later about the 'flight':
