  • Description

King Hussein of Jordan had over two hours of discussions with Prime Minister Harold Wilson on the Middle East crisis today when he called at Downing-street. The two men spent 20 minutes alone together before calling in advisers to continue the talks, during which the British leader is thought to have urged King Hussein to initiate peace talks with Israel.

Britain, which has traditionally had close links with Jordan, is anxious for a restoration of normal relations in the Middle East, both to ease tension and to restore the flow of oil from the area.

Britain has already made it clear that it is willing to help Jordan with its refugee problem, while King Hussein has clearly withdrawn Arab charges that British aircraft helped Israel during the Middle East war.

Today, Mr. Wilson greeted King Hussein warmly on arrival. No communique was issued after the talks, but officials reported they had been carried on in a cordial atmosphere.

Tonight, King Hussein left by air for Paris and Rome on hi way home to Amman.
