During the past week, the Kenya Government has issued more quit notices to non-citizen traders than ever before.

  • Description

During the past week, the Kenya Government has issued more quit notices to non-citizen traders than ever before. The traders, most of them Asian and holders of British passports, have been ordered to wind up their businesses by the end of December.

One thousand traders are affected by this latest action -- taken in addition to the 418 notices to quit issued at the beginning of the year. During the whole of last year, only 304 notices were served. So the Government is obviously determined to speed up Africanisation.

All traders under notice to quit must transfer their businesses to Kenyan citizens by the end of the year.

SYNOPSIS: Announcing the latest action, the Government said that since independence it had worked to promote the interests of Africans in the business sector. Today, the country has a strong cadre of successful and experienced businessmen.

The new batch of notices is expected to lengthen the queue of people waiting for entry to Britain. Among the Asian population in Kenya, only five-thousand people are allowed into Britain a year under present quota requirements.
