    Sudanese President Jaffar Mohamed Nimeiri has just completed a four-day visit to Belgium aimed at securing a special loan for modernising the railway system in Western Sudan.

    SYNOPSIS: The initial meeting was held at Africa House, the Brussels offices of the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP), which helps bring its members' requests before the Economic European Community (EEC). President Nimeiri is the current president of both the Arab League, and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). He was welcomed by the president of the ACP's Consultative Assembly, Monsieur Munr Assente, of Cameroon.

    Talks with the President of the EEC, Roy Jenkins, followed. Sudan is one of the largest countries in Africa, but income per head is low. It needs aid to bring thousands of acres of undeveloped land under cultivation.

    The loan agreement of modernise the railway between Babonousa and El Rahad in Western Sudan is part of a wider plan covering Sudan's entire railway network. It was signed by Sudanese Minister of Planning, Syed Nasr el din Mustafa, and the Commissioner for Development Aid, Monsieur Claude Cheysson. Sudan Railways Corporation will pay for one third of the project, which largely consists of replacing rails and signalling equipment.
