  • Description

In India, supporters of Mrs. Indira Gandhi have taken to the streets again in a mass demonstration to protest against what they claim is victimisation, this time by the income tax department.

SYNOPSIS: More than a thousand supporters marched through the streets of New Delhi. Their demonstration was the headquarters of the Income Tax Department. Inspectors of the department had recently searched Mrs. Gandhi's home. According to reports the taxmen were acting on information supplied by an official from the village where Mrs. Gandhi has a country home. Later it was said the search revealed nothing.

The demonstration can be seen as another example of Mrs. Gandhi's growing political strength after her defeat in the 1977 General Election. According to Reuters news agency there has been a marked change of attitude towards the 21 months of Mrs. Gandhi's tough emergency rule, a reaction to the mounting labour unrest, strikes and religious violence at present plaguing Mr. Desai's government.

Mrs. Gandhi still faces several charges, including refusal to give evidence before the commission investigating her emergency rule. But demonstrations like this underline the considerable strength she can still command at grass roots level. Although police stood by, the demonstrators eventually dispersed without any incidents being reported.
