  • Description

In Hamburg today (Saturday) - a silent march by 500 Turks and Turkish Cypriots living in the city, in protest against the treatment of their fellow countrymen living in Cyprus. The marchers carried banners protesting against Archbishop Makarios and the treatment of Turkish Cypriots, in an orderly procession through the University and Diplomatic quarter of the city.

Their protests coincided with the hand-over today (Saturday) of 49 Turkish Cypriots including one woman to representatives of the International Red Cross in Nicosia. They had been held hostage by the Greek Cypriots - many of them since the fighting began at the end of December. Their release was ordered by President Makarios. But this move towards peace was later followed by the worst outbreak of violence for weeks. It happened around Ktima in the far west of the island where the deathroll is put at seven Greek Cypriots, with 35 wounded and an estimated 200 missing.
