  • Description

On friday (14 November) the Argentine Army marked its 164th anniversary in a colourful ceremony in the capital, Buenos Aires.

The celebrations were highlighted by a parade by the Patricios Regiment (Patrician Regiment), wearing the brightly coloured uniforms of colonial times.

A large crowd watched as the Patricios marched to the beat of stirring military tunes.

Chief of Army Headquarters, General Roberto Viola greeted Army Commander-in-Chief General Jorge Videla, and both men watched as the troops marched past in a magnificent display of military precision.

General Viola later addressed the troops and spectators. He said the Army had a full understanding of the national reality of the country and recognised the problems. He said that it is channelling all its resources into the struggle against subversion.

He was referring to a massive campaign by the Army to wipe out the guerrilla resistance centred in Tucuman Province. In recent weeks, thousands have been arrested in the crackdown, and pitched battles have taken place between troops and guerrillas.

The anniversary celebration came at a time when the Army has assumed an influential role in Argentine politics. President Maria Estela Peron is facing strong calls for her resignation, and the country is reeling under the impact of rampant inflation, which has led to political and social unrest.

The Army ruled Argentina until 1973 when civilian rule was restored with the election of former President, General Juan Peron, shortly after his return from years of exile.
