    TRANSCRIPT

SHAH: "YES, CERTAINLY. IT IS VERY UNFORTUNATE ALL THAT IS HAPPENING. WE HOPE THAT A SOLUTION WILL SOON BE FOUND TO THIS, AS WE MIGHT SAY DRAMA.

REPORTER: IRAN IS ONE OF THE MIDDLE EAST'S MODERATE COUNTRIES - HOW DOES SHE FEEL ABOUT THE PRESENT CRISIS IN LEBANON, WHICH IS EQUALLY ONE OF THE GREAT MODERATES?

SHAH: THIS CRISIS - PERHAPS WE SHOULD LOOK A LITTLE FURTHER BACK - IS THE QUESTION OF THE PALESTINE REFUGEES. AND THAT GOES BACK TO 1947. THERE HAVE BEEN RESOLUTIONS ON THE SUBJECT, BUT THEY HAVE NEVER REALLY BEEN PUT INTO PRACTICE. I THINK THAT GREATER ATTENTION SHOULD BE PAID TO THE REAL PROBLEM - THE PROBLEM OF THE REFUGEES OF PALESTINE."

Background: AT ELYSEE PALACE TODAY (FRIDAY), THE SHAH OF IRAN, MOHAMMED REZA PAHLEVI, CALLED ON PRESIDENT GEORGES POMPIDOU. THE SHAH, WHO WAS IN PARIS ON HIS WAY HOME FROM THE UNITED STATES, TOLD REPORTERS THAT HE AND THE FRENCH HEAD OF STATE HAD DISCUSSED THE SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

AFTER SAYING THAT HE AND PRESIDENT POMPIDOU HAD DISCUSSED RELATIONS BETWEEN IRAN AND FRANCE - WHICH WERE, AS ALWAYS, PERFECTLY HARMONIOUS AND IN TOTAL ACCORD - THE SHAH WAS ASKED IF THEY HAD TALKED ABOUT THE SITUATION IN LEBANON. HE REPLIED:
DURING HIS STAY IN THE USA, THE SHAH IS REPORTED TO HAVE HELD TALKS WITH PRESIDENT RICHARD NIXON ON IRAN'S MILITARY, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC FUTURE. HE ALSO ATTENDED BANQUETS AND RECEPTIONS IN HIS HONOUR. HE WAS NOT ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE EMPRESS FARAH, BECAUSE SHE IS EXPECTING HER FOURTH CHILD AND DOCTORS ADVISED AGAINST HER MAKING THE TRIP.
