    THREE DAYS OF WIND AND TORRENTIAL RAINS HAVE CAUSED WIDE-SPREAD DAMAGE IN NEW ENGLAND, LEAVING TEN DEAD . . . AND CAUSING LANDSLIDES, WHICH BLOCKED MAJOR HIGHWAYS.

    RUSHING WATERS WASHED OUT THE HIGHWAYS. IN ALL SEVEN MAJOR ROADS WERE CLOSED BY THE LANDSLIDES ... HIGHWAYS LEADING THROUGH NORTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE INTO CANADA. POLICE RE-ROUTED BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH BOUND TRAFFIC THROUGH VERMONT.

    THE BIGGEST SLIDE BLOCKED ROUTE THREE -- THE BOSTON-TO-CANADA HIGHWAY -- AND PARTIALLY ISOLATED COMMUNITIES TO THE NORTH OF FRANCONIA NOTCH, NEW HAMPSHIRE. SO SEVERE WAS THIS SLIDE THAT CAMERAMEN COULD NOT GET INTO THE AREA.

    BUT POLICE REPORTS REVEAL THE LANDSLIDE PILED 25 (twenty-five) FEET OF BOULDERS AND EARTH ON THE HIGHWAY WHERE IT PASS (CQ) THE "GREAT STONE FACE", KNOWN TO TOURISTS AS "THE OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN." RAIN_SLICKED ROADS ACCOUNTED FOR EIGHT OF THE TEN DEATHS ... THREE IN CONNECTICUT, TWO IN VERMONT AND ONE EACH IN MAINE, RHODE ISLAND AND MASSACHUSETTS. ONE MAN WAS SWEPT OVERBOARD FROM A SMALL
    BOAT DURING A SQUALL OFF THE COAST OF MASSACHUSETTS.

    DIED OF A HEART_ATTACK WHILE BATTLING WINDS IN GUSTS UP TO 50 (fifty) MILES AN HOUR.
