    THEIR DEMONSTRATION BEGAN AS A ZIG-ZAG MARCH IN FRONT OF PARLIAMENT HOUSE WHERE HUNDREDS OF THEM SHOUTED: "HALT JAPAN-SOUTH KOREA TALKS IMMEDIATELY", "YANKEE GO HOME" AND "DOWN WITH PREMIER IKEDA".

    ONE THOUSAND POLICE GUARDING THE BUILDING MOVED IN ON THE STUDENTS AND ORDERED THEM TO DISPERSE. THE STUDENTS REPLIED TO THE POLICE ULTIMATUM BY STAGING A SIT-DOWN OUTSIDE THE BUILDING.

    FIERCE FIGHTS BROKE OUT WHEN POLICE MOVED BUT ONE BY ONE THE DEMONSTRATING STUDENTS WERE DRAGGED OFF AND TAKEN TO NEARBY POLICE STATIONS. OTHER PARTICIPANTS IN THE MAY DAY RALLY WERE NOT AWARE OF THE DEMONSTRATION. A BIG POLICE FORCE HAD BEEN MOBILISED BY TOKYO AUTHORITIES, WHO FEARED SUCH A DEMONSTRATION.

    ORGANISERS OF MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS ESTIMATED THAT MORE THAN 6 MILLION JAPANESE TOOK PART IN RALLIES AND PARADES THROUGHOUT THE NATION.
