Background: AMAZON REGION, PARA STATE, NORTHERN BRAZIL

Dozens of biologists and technicians are participating in a massive operation to rescue thousands of mammals, reptiles and birds whose lives are threatened by the rising waters of man-made lake. On November 19, rescue workers gathered in northern Brazil's Para State, through which run the various tributaries of the Amazon River, in an effort to save the region's rich collection of wildlife before the lake's waters - rising to feed the new Tucurui Dam - submerge a huge valley where the animals had their natural habitat. Elecronorte, the state company responsible for the dam, said that Tucurui's size and capacity will surpass the Brazilian-Paraguayan Itaipu Dam - currently the world's largest - by an estimated fifty per cent. Many species of monkeys, snakes and other creatures are being saved by the rescue team, which then transport the caged animals to base cam[s away from the dangers of the rising waters. Environmentalists have accused Electonorte of using the deadly "Agent Orange" to defoliate the area, but the company has denied the allegations.
