  • Description

IN NEW YORK YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) A GROUP OF FORMER AMERICAN SERVICEMEN CEREMONIALLY BURNED THEIR DISCHARGE PAPERS AS A GESTURE OF PROTEST AGAINST UNITED STATES POLICIES IN VIETNAM.
THE SERVICEMEN BELONG TO A GROUP KNOWN AS THE VETERANS AND RESERVISTS TO END THE WAR IN VIETNAM. YESTERDAY WAS VETERANS' DAY IN THE UNITED STATES, CELEBRATING THE END OF WORLD WAR ONE.
THIRTY FIVE FORMER SERVICEMEN BURNED THEIR DISCHARGE PAPERS DURING THE CEREMONY.
THE DEMONSTRATORS, IN A PAMPHLET CIRCULATED AT THE CEREMONY, SAID THAT THE UNITES STATES GOVERNMENT IN RECENT YEARS HAD BEEN USING VETERANS' DAY TO RALLY SUPPORT FOR CURRENT AMERICAN MILITARY ENGAGEMENTS. THE DEMONSTRATORS, VETERANS OF WORLD WAR ONE, WORLD WAR TWO AND THE KOREAN CAMPAIGN, SAID VETERANS' DAY HAD BECOME AN OBSCENITY.
THE VETERANS' GROUP SUPPORTS AND IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL OF ALL AMERICAN TROOPS FROM VIETNAM, AND AN END OF WHAT THE GROUP DESCRIBES AS AMERICA'S ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND SOCIAL DOMINATION OF THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE.
YESTERDAY WAS THE THIRD OCCASION ON WHICH MEMBERS OF THE VETERANS AND RESERVISTS TO END THE WAR IN VIETNAM HAVE BURNED DISCHARGE PAPERS AND MILITARY DECORATIONS.
THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKER AT THE RALLY WAS MR. A. J. MUSTE, CHAIRMAN OF THE VIETNAM PEACE PARADE COMMITTEE, AND A PROMINENT AMERICAN PACIFIST.
