Soccer -- and Liverpool drew three-all with the Israeli national side on Monday (28 May) in Tel Aviv. The match was a friendly and gave the reigning English League champions the chance to try out their latest signing, Abi Cohen, an Israeli.

SYNOPSIS: Before the game, Cohen drove round the ground with Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish --their Scottish International striker who was voted European footballer of the year in 1978.

Cohen finally signed for Liverpool on Monday (28 May) for GBP200,000 sterling (400,000 U.S. dollars) after months of speculation. He started the match playing sweeper for Israel wearing number 5.

But it was Liverpool's number 8, Jimmy Case, who nearly scored first. Cohen, who before being signed by Liverpool, played for israeli league leaders Maccabi, is rated the best player to emerge from Israel since the 1970 World Cup. And at 22 he already has more than 18 international caps.

In the 32nd minute, Liverpool showed the sort of skill that has made them Britain's most successful club ever. Kennedy dummied, and Case scored from a free kick.

In the second half, Cohen pulled on the number 16 shirt for Liverpool and soon showed some nice touches.

Liverpool manager Bob Paisley later described Cohen as a player of great scope and vision. He is widely regarded a the future replacement to the ageing Liverpool captain Emlyn Hughes, and will go to England in August, when the new soccer season begins.
