  • Description

East Germany beat Algeria 3-1 on Thursday (28 February) in the final game of a two-day friendly international football tournament held in Algiers.

The tournament was the first occasion East Germany's World Cup squad has been on display. They won a place in this year's finals to be played in West Germany, and have been placed in Group I. The team will meet Australia, Chile and the host country during the initial stages of the final.

The drawing of the two Germany's in the same group raised some eyebrows at the time. The two teams will meet in Hamburg on 22nd June.

The player to watch during the World Cup competition in the East German side is Hans-Juergen Kreische, Whose mid-field play and overall authority has been compared by sports writers to England's Bobby Moore or West Germany's Franz Beckenbauer.

Another strong player in the team, is Achim Streich. He was one of the goal-scorers in last November's World Cup qualifier against Albania. A fine 4-1 victory against the Albanians in Tirania gave the East German side a place in the finals after three previous unsuccessful attempts.
