  • Description

UNEMPLOYED CAR WORKERS TODAY (MONDAY) JEERED AND BOOED THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR. HAROLD WILSON, OUTSIDE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN LONDON.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS SHORTLY BEFORE MR. WILSON RECEIVED TRADE UNION LEADERS WHO PROTESTED AGAINST SACKINGS IN BRITAIN'S CAR INDUSTRY.

THE SITUATION IN THE INDUSTRY IS WORSENING. THE BOARD OF TRADE HAS REPORTED THAT SALES OF NEW MOTOR VEHICLES HAD DROPPED TO THEIR LOWEST LEVEL FOR NEARLY THREE YEARS.

SEVERAL THOUSAND MORE CAR WORKERS WERE LAID OFF TODAY, BRINGING THE NUMBER OF ME NEITHER ON STRIKE OR LAID OFF BECAUSE OF STRIKES TO MORE THAN 20,000.

THOSE WHO BOOED AND JEERED MR. WILSON WERE FROM BRITISH MOTOR CORPORATION FACTORIES IN THE MIDLANDS. ABOUT 200 OF THE MEN WERE LATER ALLOWED INTO THE CENTRAL LOBBY OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS TO SEE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT FROM THE MIDLANDS.

CAR MANUFACTURERS TODAY ASKED THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER, MR. CALLAGHAN, TO EASE THE SQUEEZE AND ENABLE THEIR INDUSTRY - BRITAIN'S BIGGEST EXPORTER - TO RESTORE NORMAL PRODUCTION AND EMPLOYMENT. BUT THE MANUFACTURERS SAID LATER THEY HAD GOT NOWHERE.

THERE IS NATURAL SOUND THROUGHOUT THIS FILM.
