  • Description

The Indonesian Army supervised oath-taking ceremonies in Djakarta yesterday (Monday) to dissolve the P.K.I. -- or Indonesian Communist Party -- and its affiliated organisations. Party members took oaths and attended the burning of Communist books, pamphlets and flags.

The former P.K.I. members, including women with children in their arms, watched the burning of Communist literature at Command Post 0502 in silence. Officials and Army men stood by with the former Party members as piles of Communist literature and flags were set on fire by one of the women.

The literature included books by D.N. Aidit, the influential P.K.I. leader who fled after the abortive "September 30" coup and is now missing, and some magazines from Peking as well as pamphlets. P.K.I. members took the oath before attending the book-burning.

(Meanwhile, the Indonesian Army is reported to be in full control of East Java where fighting has been going on with the Communists. The official Antara News Agency said all representative bodies in the area had been purged of Communist supporters and that the peasants had gone back to work.)
