  • Description

The population of Thessaly (Central Greece) gave a warm welcome to General George Grivas, the former EOKA leader, Nov. 30, - but he made no mention of the political campaign he was expected to launch. Instead his visit became the latest event in his round of tributes to EOKA fallen.

At Karditsa, Grivas, in his Cyprus campaign beret, marched with the local mayor and welcoming crowds to the cathedral for a memorial service to EOKA men, and afterwards headed a wreath laying ceremony. Later he addressed the crowd on EOKA's struggle in Cyprus, and had a word of praise for Greek youth.

Placards carried by the crowds bore a slogan now well-known in Greece: "General, Save Greece."
Grivas' visit - aimed at gathering support for his political campaign in forthcoming Greek General Elections - follows similar tours of contact with the people in eastern, Northern and Southern Greece, Crete and the Islands.
