  • Description

The world record for a painting sold by auction was smashed on Friday (27 November) when the famous portrait by Velasquez of his assistant, Juan de Pareja, was knocked down at Christie's for 2 310 000 sterling. This, said a representative of the buyer afterwards, is not too expensive.

The price was a sensation, far beyond all expectations and outstripping the previous record for a painting by almost three times. The former record was the 821 482 sterling paid in 1961 for Rembrandt's painting of "Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer."
Alec Wildenstein of "Wildenstein's", the New York dealers who bough the Velasquez, was not overwhelmed by the sum of money involved.
