Background: George Habash, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), has called for the mobilisation of a 500,000- strong force. Speaking at Beirut's Arab University on Thursday (18 May) at a memorial rally for Dr. Wadih Haddad, Co-founder of the PFLP, he said the Palestinian revolution should enter every Palestinian home. The rally came 40 days after Dr Haddad's death, reported to be from Cancer, in an East German hospital. He was buried in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, but Dr Habash a lifelong friend, promised that one day, his remains would be buried in his home town of Safad, in northern Israel.

SYNOPSIS: Dr. Habash was joined at the rally by Palestine Liberation Organisation representative Abu Iyad.

The rally was held in the university's Nasser Hall, and one of the main speaker was Dr Haddad's widow. Others to speak included Abu Iyad, Dr Samir Ghosheh, leader of the Popular Struggle Front, and the secretary of the National Movement, Mohsia Ibrahim.

In his speech, Dr Habash said the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon had failed to achieve its aim, but he warned that Israel was still committed to total obliteration of the guerrilla movement. Referring to charges that Dr Haddad and the PFLP, were terrorists, Dr Habash said "the terrorists are the Zionists, who usurped Palestinian rights and lands". Dr Habash and Dr Haddad became friends in the 1950's while studying medicine at the American University of Beirut.
