  • Description

TO CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY OF THE FIRST BICYCLE RACE ON PARIS ROUEN ROUTE, 15 FRENCH CYCLING ENTHUSIASTS RETRACED THE COURSE THIS WEEK-END-USING MACHINES MORE THAN 100 YEARS OLD.

THE "BONE-SHAKER" BICYCLES OF THE MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY WERE MADE LARGELY OF WOOD, BUT THEY STILL MANAGE TO ACHIEVE AN AVERAGE SPEED OF ABOUT FIVE MILES PER HOUR (8 KMS/H).

STARTING ON SATURDAY MORNING (6 DECEMBER) FROM THE VILLAGE DRUGSTORE IN AVENUE GEORGE V, THE ENTHUSIASTS ARE COVERING THE ORIGINAL ROUTE IN TWO STAGES AND CYCLING IN RELAY TEAMS.

THE ROUTE TOOK THEM THROUGH THE CENTRE OF PARIS, DOWN THE CHAMPS ELYSEES AND ACROSS THE ETOILE. ON SUNDAY, THEY CONTINUE ALONG THE ROAD TO ROUEN.

DESPITE CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTIES, THE ENTHUSIASTS MANAGED TO GET TOGETHER A DOZEN PRE-189 BICYCLES. ONLY FOUR OF THEM WERE IN SUFFICIENTLY GOOD CONDITION TO BE USED OVER THE COURSE. THE REST ARE BEING EXHIBITED ALONG THE ROUTE.
