Background: Nearly one thousand left-wing demonstrators staged a march in London today (Sunday, August 1) to protest against the Sudanese Government reprisals against the leaders of the abortive coup to oust President El-Nimeiry. The demonstrators - belonging to a group called "Liberation (Incorporating the Movement for Colonial Freedom)" - were led by their Chairman, Stan Newens, who delivered a petition to the Sudanese Embassy deploring the trials, imprisonment and killing of the coup leaders and supporters; and protesting the outlawing of the sudanese Communist Party. A heavy police guard watched over the marchers from Hyde Park to the Sudanese Embassy, but it was peaceful and no incidents occurred.
