Background: Manchester motorcyclist, Peter Collins, won the Inter-Continental speedway Final at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday (26 June). Collins beat off a strong challenge from New Zealand's Ivan Mauger to win the event.

SYNOPSIS: The start of heat nine, with Australia's Phil Crump snatching the lead on the first lap. Crump has been tipped as a future world champion.

But it was not to be Crump's night. Manchester rider Peter Collins caught him on the outside and took the lead. Collins was invincible. He poured on the power and came home a comfortable winner.

The final of the Inter-Continental series, and Collins found himself pitted against the veteran Ivan Mauger from New Zealand. but Collins, already with one good win under his belt took the lead and would not give it up. During earlier events both riders had scored 12 points and this race would decide the winner.

Collins won with Mauger second. After his lap of honour with the runner-up, he told newsmen that it was the first class track that had helped him to win. He thought after the first race he would not even qualify, but then everything clicked, he said, and he ended up in the winner's circle.

The biggest surprise of the meeting was the failure of world speedway champion, Ole Olsen of Denmark. After two poor performances during the night he failed to qualify for the world championships in Poland in September.
