  • Description

The Zambian Prime Minister mr. Daniel Lisulo arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday (6 December) during a nine-day visit to India. Mr. Lisulo was in the Indian capital for talks with the Indian Premier Mr. Morarji Desai on bilateral cooperation and the latest situation in Southern Africa. On Thursday (7 December) Mr. Lisulo suggested to a group of African students that India provide military support to nationalist movements in Southern Africa.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Lisulo arrived in Delhi after meeting political leaders in Bombay and Madras. He was greeted by Prime Minister Morarji Desai and Foreign Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Mr. Lisulo heads a large delegation including the Minister of Commerce and Foreign Trade Mr. James Mapoma. In the talks that followed, India agreed to give one hundred million rupees (thirteen million US dollars) to help Zambia in its efforts to become self-sufficient in food and agriculture. The two countries also agreed to increase trade.

At a dinner given in Mr. Lisulo's honour, Mr. Desai said that the continuing presence of white minority regimes in Southern Africa pose a serious threat to international peace and security. But Mr. Lisulo declined to tell newsmen whether he discussed with Mr. Desai his proposal that India provide arms to African nationalist groups in Southern Africa.
