  • Description

An acrobat from Germany failed in his bid to walk 820 feet (250 metres) across the River Thames on a tightrope on Friday (August 6). He was 30-year-old Franz Josef Burbach from Cologne, who was trying to raise money for charity. Half-way across, however, he gave up and tried to drag himself the rest of the way in a sitting position. But that also failed, and he eventually fell 60 feet (20 metres) into the water. No-one in the watching crowds responded to his offer to fall in for GBP300 (sterling). Mr Burbach, after being picked up by a rescue boat, explained that he tried to cross without his balancing pole, which was damaged, He would make the attempt again, he added.
