INTRODUCTION: Four children have been reported drowned as flood waters swept through Johannesburg's Soweto and Klipspruit townships on Tuesday (1 February). The children were from the Klipspruit coloured (mixed race) township were three days of torrential rain have caused the River Klip to burst its banks.

SYNOPSIS: In Soweto African township helicopters were called in to rescue blacks stranded on the roods of their shanty towns. The River Klip is one of two flowing through Soweto.

White police were also called in to help in the rescue work. Dozens of houses were affected by the flooding, and about 80 Africans had to be airlifted off roofs. Altogether an estimated 500 families were affected.

As well as the police, two Air Force helicopters were used in the operations to save the people who had huddled on the roofs of their shanty homes to escape the fast-flowing waters. Similar flooding was last reported from the areas 13 years ago. Several dozen houses were said to be almost submerged.

Some cars were washed off a bridge over the swollen river, and at least two men had to wade through the rushing waters to safety.
