  • Description

THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY'S MOST MOBILE FORCE - THE SPECIAL AIR SERVICES. IN PERTH, THEY UNDERGO RIGOROUS BASIC TRAINING FOR SIX WEEKS. THE SUCCESSFUL RECRUITS GO INTO A REGIMENT WHICH HAS ALREADY A FORMIDABLE REPUTATION TO GO WITH ITS MOTTO - "STRIKE SWIFTLY."
LEARNING TO HANDLE A CANOE...OR TO CROSS A RIVER....ARE IMPORTANT IN THE SERVICE'S KIND OF WARFARE. THE S.A.S., SIMILAR TO THE WARTIME COMMANDO UNITS, WAS FORMED AS A COMPANY NINE YEARS AGO AND REFORMED AS A REGIMENT IN 1964. MEN OF THE SPECIAL AIR SERVICE HAVE BEEN SENT TO SOUTH EAST ASIA AND TWO OF THEIR SQUADRONS HAVE BEEN STATIONED IN MALAYSIAN BORNEO. ANOTHER SQUADRON IS BEING POSTED TO SOUTH VIETNAM.

IMPORTANT IN THE PRELIMINARY TRAINING IS THE WORK ON THE "SNEAKER RANGE". THE RECRUIT MOVES THROUGH THE AREA FIRING AT TARGETS WHICH FLASH ACROSS HIS PATH. IN RECONNAISSANCE WORK, IT'S ESSENTIAL TO RADIO BACK INFORMATION TO DIRECT ARTILLERY FIRE. USING A MODEL, EACH RECRUIT WORKS OUT THE CO-ORDINATES OF A SELECTED TARGET.

IN THIS GROUP OF THIRTY-THREE, EVERYONE WAS SUCCESSFUL AND HAS BEEN ACCEPTED INTO THE REGIMENT. THE NEXT STEP IS A BASIC PARACHUTE COURSE AT WILLIAMSTOWN IN NEW SOUTH WALES. THEY'LL BE MEMBERS OF THE FOURTH SQUADRON. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THERE'S A SPECIAL PARADE BEFORE THE REGIMENT'S COMMANDING OFFICER, LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRATHWAITE.
