    The thirty-second anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima by an American atomic bomb was commemorated in Nagasaki, Japan, on Tuesday (9 August) with a special service.

    SYNOPSIS: Large crowds gathered at Nagasaki's Peace Monument where the service was held.

    Many people brought flowers and placed them at a site in front of the memorial reserved for the purpose.

    The large gathering including a number of Japanese and foreign dignitaries, as well as the Mayor of the city where the American forces dropped the atomic bomb during World War II. The United Nations was represented by UN General Assembly resident, Mr. Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe. A one-minute silence was observed during the service in memory of the dead.

    An exhibition of paintings depicting scenes of the horror was also held as part of the anniversary. The exhibition was mounted at the Hiroshima Prefecture Museum and attracted ?? total entry of 24 pictures. They were all painted by amateur artists and showed their conception of the aftermath of the explosion. The blast on 9 August, 1945, killed 39,000 people and caused injury to a further 25,000.
