  • Description

There was a new development in the Algerian crisis Dec. 12. In the Casbah, the Arab quarter of Algiers, Moslems attacked the small Jewish community there. The main Jewish synagogue and several Jewish shops were sacked, but there were no casualties. A nationalist flag was hoisted over the synagogue.

With Moslems in ferment inside the walls of the Casbah,European settlers lay in wait outside. Renewed violence was feared if large numbers of them managed to get into the old native city with its population of 200,000 Moslems.

And as Moslem supporters of the F.L.N. (National Liberation Front) opened fire on the French troops, Jews left their homes. Some took their belongings and treasured possessions. In the debris on the streets - pages from Hebrew books.

The Army replied - and it was later officially reported that 20 Moslems died during the day. Official death toll in rioting during the past three days was confirmed Dec 12. as 90, including 6 dead in Oran. Everywhere in the Casbah, Moslems waved the rebel F.L.N flag and carried pictures of Ferhat Abbas, President of the Nationalist Provisional Government that sits in Tunis.

Correspondents were allowed to pass through the barricades to talk with young Moslems who had established a headquarters in a cafe. And one senior Moslem said there was great resentment in the Casbah at the difference in the treatment accorded to French and Moslem demonstrators by the security forces.
