    KENYA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) CELEBRATED THE FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF SELF-GOVERNMENT. TO CELEBRATE THE DAY PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA REVIEWED A PARADE OF MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES THROUGH THE STREETS OF NAIROBI.

    PRESIDENT KENYATTA WAS JOINED ON THE REVIEWING STAND BY VARIOUS MEMBERS OF THE KENYA CABINET.

    IN A SPEECH FOLLOWING THE MARCH-PAST, PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID THAT SINCE "MADARAKA DAY" -- INDEPENDENCE DAY -- IN 1963, "AFRICAN SOCIALISM HAS INSPIRED OUR NATIONAL PLANNING AND OUR INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS".

    HE WARNED THE PEOPLE OF KENYA TO BE WARY OF MEN WITHIN THE COUNTRY WHO "CAN BE BRIBED TO BETRAY THEIR COUNTRY AND ENGAGE IN SUBVERSION AND INTRIGUE."
    "I KNOW THAT EFFORTS TO DESTROY OUR NATIONAL STABILITY ARE BEING MADE," HE SAID. "THEY ARE NOT, HOWEVER, WIDESPREAD ENOUGH TO DEMAND LARGE-SCALE SECURITY MEASURES."
    IN HIS ADDRESS THE PRESIDENT ALSO TOUCHED ON FOREIGN AID ("WE WILL NOT BE BOUGHT OR BLACKMAILED"), UNEMPLOYMENT AND TERRITORIAL PROBLEMS.

    AT THE END OF HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT KENYATTA SHOUTED "HARAMBE", THE TRADITIONAL RALLYING CALL OF INDEPENDENCE IN KENYA. THE AUDIENCE RESPONDED WITH CHEERS AND SHOUTS.

    THE MARCH PAST OF TROOPS ALSO FEATURED DISPLAYS OF ARMOURED CARS, TRUCKS, MORTARS AND OTHER WEAPONS.

    HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENT WAS AN AERIAL SALUTE FROM AIRCRAFT OF THE KENYAN AIR FORCE.
