Background: For a hot August bank holiday pastime the citizens of RGDE, on France's river HERAULT, have found joust the job. Jousting, that is, from long, fan-tailed boats.
Armed with long wooden lances and shields, the contestants stand high above the water on the stern of the boats while their crews row them, Viking style, along the fast-flowing river.
Skilful navigation brings the contesting boats abreast and as they sweep by, comes the clash of lances.
Sometimes it's 'no contest' as neither Knight gets home a worthwhile thrust. But more often than not a firm footing, split second timing and a forceful tilt will send an adversary toppling to The Big Splash.
This annual event is a great favourite with the locals and tourists alike. The river banks are thronged with spectators each cheering his or her particular favourite.
And the contestants? Well, it's every man for himself -- and the river take the hind-most!
