  • Description

A group of foreign delegates attending the 12-day United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime - now in session in London - visited Wormwood Scrubs Prison, London, Aug 17. Other groups were simultaneously visiting Holloway Womens Prison and Eastchurch Prison.

At Wormwood Scrubs, delegates were received and shown around the prison by the Governor, Mr J.B. Smith. After watching prisoners during physical training exercise, the delegates inspected toys and handicrafts made by prisoners, walked through the cell blocks and visited the splendid prison Chapel of St Francis of Assisi.

Approximately 850 criminologists, police and prison officials, law officers and social workers from more than eighty countries are attending the Congress, which opened at Church House, Westminster, London, Aug 8. Although prevention of crime is a major problem, they are all deeply concerned with treatment of offenders, particularly juvenile delinquents.

Organising this Congress every five years - this is the second - is one of the most important aspects of the UN programme of social defence begun in 1946.
