Speaking to the National Assembly on Thursday (20 May), President Sadat told members of his intentions to consolidate the United Arab Republic. Referring to the United Sates' attempts for peace in the Middle East, he said that Israel must be "squeezed."
In his speech, which was broadcast on Egyptian radio stations to the people, the President said that six former cabinet ministers--expelled for their parts in last week's alleged coup--were still being held for questioning. President Sadat referred to thefts of private papers from the late President Nasser's safe in his allegations.

SYNOPSIS: The United Sates must squeeze Israel for peace in the Middle East. President Sadat said this on Thursday in his speech to Egypt's National Assembly. He added that enough diplomatic messages had been exchanged on the subject and that Egypt now wanted action.

Members of the Egyptian parliament--now renamed the People's Council--applauded President Sadat when he told them that an interim solution must be the first phase for complete Israeli withdrawal from all occupied territories. He added that Egypt would not accept American promises to try to exert pressure on Israel.
