MR. GOMULKA, THE POLISH LEADER, SURVIVED DISGRACE AND IMPRISONMENT TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST?

  • Description

MR. GOMULKA, THE POLISH LEADER, SURVIVED DISGRACE AND IMPRISONMENT TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL POLITICAL FIGURES IN EASTERN EUROPE. HE CAME TO POWER IN 1956, TWO YEARS AFTER HE WAS RELEASED FROM A PRISON SENTENCE IMPOSED ON THE ORDERS OF MARSHAL STALIN.

HE WAS BORN IN FEBRUARY, 1905, IN KROSNO, SOUTH-EASTERN POLAND, AND WENT TO WORK AS A BLACKSMITH WHEN HE WAS FOURTEEN YEARS OLD. HE ENTERED POLITICS THROUGH TRADE UNION ACTIVITIES AND BECAME A PROFESSIONAL ORGANISER FOR THE COMMUNIST PARTY.

MR. GOMULKA WAS IN PRISON AT LODZ WHEN WORLD WAR TWO STARTED. ON HIS RELEASE HE WENT BAREFOOT TO WARSAW AND JOINED A WORKERS' BATTALION TO HELP DEFEND THE CITY. WHEN WARSAW FELL, HE WENT OVER TO THE SOVIET LINES AND SETTLED IN LVOV, THEN OCCUPIED BY THE RED ARMY.

LATER, WHEN THE GERMAN ARMY SEIZED LVOV, HE JOINED THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT ORGANISED BY THE POLISH UNITED WORKERS' PARTY TO CONTINUE THE PRE-WAR COMMUNIST PARTY. HE BECAME A LEADER IN THE RESISTANCE TO THE GERMANS AND IN THE COMMUNIST MOVEMENT.

IN 1943, MR. GOMULKA WAS NAMED SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE UNITED WORKERS' PARTY, AND IN 1945 HE BECAME DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER IN THE POLISH PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT.

BY THE MIDDLE OF 1948, HOWEVER, HIS POLITICAL FORTUNES HAD DECLINED AND HE WAS DISMISSED FROM HIS POST AS PARTY SECRETARY. HE WAS DENOUNCED BY THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE FOR HIS OBJECTION TO THE COMINFORM'S ATTACKS ON MARSHAL TITO OF YUGOSLAVIA AND FOR OPPOSING THE COLLECTIVISATION OF POLISH AGRICULTURE.

IN 1951, HE WAS DEPRIVED OF HIS PARLIAMENTARY IMMUNITY AND IMPRISONED BUT NEVER TRIED. HE WAS QUIETLY RELEASED FROM PRISON IN DECEMBER 1954, AND RE-ADMITTED TO THE PARTY IN THE SUMMER OF 1956. IN OCTOBER, THE PARTY'S CENTRAL COMMITTEE DECIDED ON A LIBERALISED POLICY AND MR. GOMULKA WAS ELECTED FIRST SECRETARY.

THE NEW NATIONAL POLICY LED TO SERIOUS DIFFERENCES WITH MOSCOW, BUT IT WAS MR. GOMULKA WHO EVENTUALLY FORGED THE STRONGEST POLITICAL ALLIANCE WITH ??? CENTURIES.
