  • Description

MR GEORGE THOMAS, BRITISH MINISTER OF STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS, ENDED HIS FAMILIARISATION TOUR OF EAST AFRICA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). HIS FINAL CALL BEFORE LEAVING FOR LONDON WAS UPON PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA OF KENYA, AFTER EARLIER DISCUSSIONS WITH THE MAYOR OF NAIROBI, ALDERMAN CHARLES RUBIA.

DETAILS OF THE TALKS BETWEEN MR THOMAS AND PRESIDENT KENYATTA HAVE NOT YET BEEN RELEASED. AN EARLIER DISCUSSION WITH THE MAYOR OF NAIROBI CENTRED AROUND MR THOMAS'S OFFER OF HELP TO THE NAIROBI CITY COUNCIL, SHOULD IT EVER NEED THE ASSISTANCE OF THE COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT. THIS OFFER IS IN KEEPING WITH THE PURPOSE OF HIS EAST AFRICAN TOUR, WHICH SOUGHT TO GAIN INFORMATION OF THE PROBLEMS FACING AFRICAN COMMONWEALTH NATIONS, AND TO MATCH AID TO THE SPECIFIC NEED.

DURING HIS VISIT, WHICH FOLLOWED A THREE-DAY STAY IN UGANDA, MR THOMAS STRONGLY DEFENDED BRITAIN'S ECONOMIC SANCTIONS AGAINST RHODESIA. HE CLAIMED THAT VOLUNTARY SANCTIONS ALONE HAD REDUCED RHODESIA'S ANNUAL TRADE FROM GBP150-MILLION (STERLING) TO GBP80-MILLION, WITH EVERY EXPECTATION OF A FURTHER DROP.
