Background: Some workers on London's bus and underground railway services refused to work on Saturday (13 September) because they anticipated trouble from Manchester United fans who were due to arrive in the capital for their team's match at White City with Queen's Park Rangers.

United's supporters have an unenviable reputation for violence and rowdiness, and at the group police ordered some youths to remove their boots, but there were only a couple of minor disturbances during the match. Nevertheless London Transport but crews kept to their decision, made earlier, not to take their vehicles near the ground between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the evening.

The Manchester United fans also had to return home disappointed, because their team lost its first league match of the season, going down 1-nil to Q.P.R.
