  • Description

Egypt and Libya have both reaffirmed their desire for union between the two countries. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt said on Monday (23 July) he was prepared to go ahead with a realistic union. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya announce don Monday that he had withdrawn his resignation and would remain leader until union was achieved.

News of President Gaddafi's resignation -- on July 11 -- came as the crusade of 40-thousand Libyans to Egypt in support of the merger of the two countries ran into trouble. On Saturday (21 July) they gave up their plans to march on masse to Cairo and stay there until unification.

A delegation of twenty-one from the marchers went on to Cairo. They took with them a petition, written in blood, urging the immediate merger of the two countries. When the marchers' delegation arrived in Cairo they were welcomed by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union, Dr. Mohamed Hafez Ghanem.
