    A DEAD FLAT CALM AND LIGHT AIRS RUINED THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF RACES BETWEEN BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CATAMARAN TROPHY AT THORPE BAY ON 18 SEPTEMBER.WHEN THE TIME LIMIT OF FOUR HOURS HAD BEEN REACHED, THE BOATS TAKING PART IN THE 15-MILE RACE HAD ONLY REACHED THE HALFWAY MARK.

    THE DEFENDING BOAT, "HELLCAT III", WAS SAILED BY REG.WHITE, WITH THE DESIGNER, R.MCALPINE-DOWNIE, AS CREW.THE AUSTRALIAN CHALLENGER, "QUEST" WAS SAILED BY JOHN MUNNS AND GRAEME ANDERSON.

    AS EXPECTED "QUEST" SHOWED ABILITY IN LIGHT AIRS, AND WHEN THE STOP SIGNAL WAS GIVEN, SHE WAS THREE-QUARTERS OF A MILE AHEAD OF HER RIVAL.
