    THE PRIME MINISTER OF GAMBIA, ??? DAVIS JAWARA THIS WEEK STARTED AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO MAURITANIA.

    SIR DAVID WAS MET AT NOUAKCHOTT AIRPORT BY PRESIDENT MOKTAR OULD DADDAH. THE GAMBIAN PARTY OF EIGHT INCLUDED THE FOREIGN MINISTER. ANDREW KAWARA. WITH THE MAURITANIAN PRESIDENT TO MEET THEM WERE MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT, NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND DIPLOMATIC CORPS.

    A GUARD OF HONOUR AT THE AIRPORT WAS MOUNTED BY PARATROOPERS AND ARAB SCOUTS. AFTER THE INSPECTION SIR DAVID DROVE INTO THE CAPITAL WITH PRESIDENT OULD DADDAH.

    FIRST OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENT FOR THE VISITORS WAS A TOUR OF NOUAKCHOTT. THEY SAW A NEW CRAFTS CENTRE, WHERE WOMEN SUSTAIN THE ANCIENT TRADITION OF CARPET WEAVING, USING MOORISH DESIGNS THAT GO BACK TO THE NINTH CENTURY.

    THE CAPITAL IS AN EXPAND IN CITY, BUT IT'S PLAGUED BY A WATER SHORTAGE. THE LATEST EFFORT TO OVERCOME THIS IS A PLANT FOR DESALINATING SEA WATER. SIR DAVID VISITED THE PLANT, WHICH IS NOT YET COMPLETED BUT IS ALREADY SUPPLYING FRESH WATER TO THREE DISTRIBUTION POINTS IN THE CITY.

    AT A BANQUET IN HIS HONOUR, THE GAMBIAN LEADER SAID HIS COUNTRY COULD PLAY A KEY ROLE IN BRINGING THE FRENCH -- AND ENGLISH-SPEAKING STATES OF WEST AFRICA TOGETHER IN A REGIONAL UNION.

    SIR DAVID SAID THAT GAMBIA FULLY APPROVED OF PLANS TO HOLD A WEST AFRICAN SUMMIT CONFERENCE IN MONROVIA NEXT APRIL.
