IN DUBLIN TODAY (WEDNESDAY) A BIG PARADE TO CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK'S DAY -- THREE HOURS OF PAGEANTRY INCLUDED MUSIC FROM NO LESS THAN 23 BANDS. THE MANY FLOATS IN THE PROCESSION DEPICTED A NEW IRELAND, RESURGENT IN INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURE.

THOUSANDS OF DUBLINERS BOUGHT THEIR TRADITIONAL SHAMROCK AND CROWDED THE STREETS AS THE PARADE MOVED THROUGH THE WIDE EXPANSE OF O'CONNELL STREET. A SPECIAL PLACE OF HONOUR IN THE PROCESSION WAS GIVEN TO A PARTY OF AMERICANS FROM JERSEY CITY, MOST OF THEM OF IRISH STOCK, WHO WERE LED BY THE MAYOR OF JERSEY. THEY MARCHED BEHIND THE WEXFORD SILVER BAND, FROM THE WEXFORD COUNTY HOME OF THE LATE PRESIDENT KENNEDY.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY IS NOT OBSERVED AS A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN IRELAND, ALTHOUGH THERE'S A MOVEMENT TRYING TO BRING THIS ABOUT. THE CHURCH OF IRELAND CELEBRATES THE DAY BY HAVING A PILGRIMAGE TO SAUL, THE HILL ON WHICH ST. PATRICK PLAYED.
